Using a Spatial Perspective to Explore the Creation of Safe School Environments

Sun, April 19, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, Vevey 1&2

Abstract

Besides being an end in itself, the cultivation of a safe school environment contributes to student success. In order to explore how staff at a secondary school worked preventively to reduce violence and create a safe school for students, a qualitative case study was conducted during the course of one school year on practices outside the classrooms, known as the borderlands. A spatial perspective was used to analyze the data. Results show how physical, social and mental aspects interact to create and maintain a safe school for the students, and that there are reasons for applying an ecological perspective in studies of school practices.
