Relationship Between Performance on the National Board of Medical Examiners® Comprehensive Clinical Medicine Self-Assessment and United States Medical Licensing Examination® Step 3 for U.S. and International Medical Graduates

Abstract

The Comprehensive Clinical Medicine Self-Assessment (CCMSA) is a tool for students to help assess whether they are prepared for USMLE Step 3. This study examined the relationship between performance on CCMSA and Step 3 for US/Canadian (USMGs) and international medical school graduates (IMGs) using linear and logistic regression based on a sample of 694 participants who took CCMSA prior to their first Step 3 attempt. CCMSA scores explained 67% of the variation in first Step 3 scores for USMGs and 49% of the variation for IMGs; the relationship was somewhat different for the two groups as indicated by statistically different sets of regression parameters for the linear regression model based on each group.
