The Perceptions of Community College Students and Program Administrators Participating in Peer Mentoring Programs

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This multiple case study examined two Midwestern community colleges’ Peer Mentoring programs that were identified as having successful retention rates. It explored responses from both peer mentoring program administrators and student participants regarding students’ social and academic success. From the data, themes emerged indicating there are specific characteristics of peer mentoring programs that administrators will want to include to implement a meaningful program that will both increase learning and student engagement in college. The implications of this inquiry for application in higher education directly influence school leaders trying to create meaningful interventions to increase retention and completion rates in college.
