Métis Education in Ontario's Schools: Finding Policy and Curriculum That Lives

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Scottsdale

Abstract

In 2007, the Ontario Ministry of Education advanced the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework. The Métis Nation of Ontario’s Education and Training Branch cooperated in its development. The Framework challenges educators to develop procedures encouraging Métis student self-identification, to collaborate with Métis families and communities to support academic achievement, to enhance Indigenous curriculum, to support Metis holistic lifelong learning, and to be more inclusive. Based on qualitative and quantitative data, this paper shares the ways that schools and people who live the policy are meeting its mandate and some of the very real challenges that remain.
