Abstract

To meet the needs of students with learning disabilities (LD) in the least restrictive environment (IDEA, 2004), schools utilize science classes to provide students with LD access to general education (GE) curriculum. Today, more than two-thirds of students with disabilities receive science instruction in GE classrooms (NCES, 2011). Students with LD consistently struggle to keep up with science curriculum, especially at the middle school level. This study examined academic knowledge gained by students with LD compared to same age peers, in two diverse 7th grade science inclusive classrooms. Results revealed students with LD gained less knowledge than GE students and students with other disabilities. Lack of appropriate supports may have an impact on the knowledge gained by students with LD.
