Abstract

It has become increasingly harder for African Americans to enter the teaching field. The “basic skills” portion of the teacher certification exams have become a roadblock for many Black preservice teachers to be admitted into a teacher education program. This paper aims to tackle this question by exploring the lives of those few Black prospective teachers. It highlights the trajectory of four Black preservice teachers attending a Historically Black University (HBCU) over a seven-year period.
