The Effect of Personalized Statistics Learning Through Peer Modeling in an Open Learning Environment

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Personalization can resolve the issues of heterogeneous classroom in higher education and accommodate diverse needs among students and teachers. However, teachers may hesitate to implement personalized instruction because of three concerns:1) lack of time, 2) insufficiently continuous support, and 3) lack of the required knowledge for personalized instruction (Lin & Kim, 2013). The purpose of this study was to develop a development model which aimed to promote personalized statistics learning. Effective implementation of peer modeling in this developmental model can overcome the two barriers: lack of time and the required knowledge for personalized instruction. Through peer modeling in an open learning environment, individual students can achieve mastery, improve motivation, and decrease their anxiety toward learning statistics.
