Priorities for Quality Honors Education

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Honors education has grown exponentially within higher education, and a great deal of variation currently exists among programs. The National Collegiate Honors Council has adopted Basic Characteristics of Fully Developed Honors Programs to guide new and developing programs, but no standards exist for Honors education. A historical examination of honors education suggests that the field is developing as a profession, and Caplow’s theory on professionalization, used as the theoretical framework for this study, suggests that the next step for honors education will be specialized titles for programs that pass a review of examination. This mixed-methods study used the Delphi methodology to examine an instrument that can be used for purposes of assessment in honors education.
