Toward Urban Teaching for Justice: Admissions to an Urban Teacher Residency Program

Abstract

In this paper, we, two faculty charged with developing, teaching, and administering an Urban Teacher Residency (XUTR) program in a large urban district, examine how we chose preservice teachers (residents) for the second cohort of the program, and how the process reflected our development and continuous re-construction of a “third space” in urban teacher education. Our discussion identifies the challenges and concerns around admissions but there are few answers or data from existing research studies. The goal of this study is to contribute to a larger conversation about the earliest part of the teacher education process.
