When "Honor"-Related Dilemmas Make an Entrance in the School

Abstract

Due to several “honor” killings has the concepts “honor” and “honor” culture entered the public conversation. The controversial aspect of “honor” culture and “honor” crime is not whether it exists but how it can be understood and explained. There is a need for educators and school leaders to possess the knowledge and courage to act to protect students from being exposed to “honor” related violence. This paper addresses an issue facing teachers, principals, and health staff at schools: the demands and values from parents that have a serious influence on the lives of many young girls and boys, families living in a so called honor culture.
