Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the Story Supports Toolkit: A curriculum designed to enhance the quality of language and literacy interactions between the undergraduate students and preschool children who participate in the Mi Clase Mágica (MCM) program. The curriculum is a collection of materials and activities that focus on supporting undergraduate’s (a) understanding of developmentally appropriate practice (Copple & Bredekamp, 2009) and (b) use of collaborative storytelling competencies with children. This curriculum was specifically designed for and implemented in the MCM program setting: A collaborative learning environment for undergraduate and preschool participants that is located at a Head Start preschool. The program is administered jointly by university researchers and preschool staff, and characterized as a university-community partnership (Vásquez, 2002).
