An Educational Strategy to Develop Historical Thinking Through a Formative Assessment

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

A strategy that involves substantive and procedural concepts was designed to develop and assess historical thinking. The Ministry of Education in Mexico marks five historical periods for secondary grade (K8) in order to acquire these concepts. The strategy involved a tutor who provided feedback to four teams of students using rubrics. A pre-post design for diagnostic and summative assessment analysis was performed. The formative assessment was based on video analysis. A representative dialogue that represents tutor’s role and the progression of ideas in historical thinking is shown. Data indicate historical thinking was developed.
