Cognitive Processes That Lead to Career Indecision for Highly Able Adolescents From Low Socioeconomic Backgrounds: A Mixed-Methods Approach

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Green Level, Plaza B

Abstract

In this mixed methods study, the cognitive processes leading to career indecision for highly able adolescents of low socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds were investigated by combining grounded theory analysis of interview data and structural equation modeling analysis of survey data. A total of 943 Grade 7 to 9 students attending 7 academically selective high schools in low SES areas of Sydney (Australia) were participants. The finally accepted model suggested that amotivation about the career decision may be pivotal in directing economically disadvantaged high ability adolescents toward a state of career indecision. Nevertheless, career amotivation may be less of an issue if these adolescents are capable in multiple areas or if they have a desire to live up to their potential.
