Prior literature on student-athlete involvement indicates the influence organizational resources on fostering and sustaining a high level of student-athlete development. The purpose of the current paper is to explore how NCAA Division I athletic departments address student-athlete development, and providing insight to “best practices” related to two aspects of CHAMPS/Life Skills programs: individual (student-athletes and staff members) and organizational (university and athletic department).
The current paper builds on the work of Andrassy and Bruening (2011) by qualitatively exploring both common and unique characteristics of nine athletic departments identified as highly involved. The paper explores organizational dimensions needed for creating and sustaining a quality student-athlete development program.
