Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Green Level, Crystal BC

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of participation in high school activities, the amount and type of activities participated in (extracurricular vs. co-curricular) and gender on Hispanic students’ GPA and graduation status. As part of this quantitative study, data was collected during the 2012-2013 school year to examine the participation rates of 558 Hispanic students over four graduating cohort classes. Data from a dropout state graduation report (DSGR) was used to determine graduation status, ethnicity, and gender for the sample. Results indicated that students who participated in activities, extracurricular or co-curricular activities, had higher GPAs and were more likely to graduate from high school. This was true for both males and females.
