Teaching and Change in 1:1 iPad Classrooms

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Armitage

Abstract

This yearlong, multi-case qualitative study examined the experiences of four veteran secondary teachers who taught in a Midwestern, suburban school where each student and teacher had an iPad tablet computer (1:1 iPad). Using classroom observation, interview, and survey data, the purpose of this study was to understand how teaching in 1:1 iPad classrooms changed, in any way, how participants thought about and enacted their teaching. During data analysis three types of change were identified. Results suggest that what teachers know and believe about the whole enterprise of schooling and its purpose seems to be a critical driver of change and filter regarding the type(s) of change teachers choose to enact when teaching in 1:1 iPad classrooms.
