This paper examines the way education policies of school choice, that support the establishment of culturally focused schools – notably Afrocentric schooling in Toronto, Canada, and Islamic schooling in Sydney, Australia, are provoking new forms of spatial and racial separations and encounters in the city. This paper makes three moves: i) identifying the connections between policy a/effects, marketized education and culturally focused schools; ii) proposing that relational notions of space and place from non-representational theory can help us to culturally focused schools in the city as part of news forms of circulation and encounter; and, iii) positing that a focus on encounter requires continued exploration of the way that race works in relation to education policy and the city.
