Principals' Management of New Teachers in Primary Education

Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Previous research on HR practices in education has generated insights into the differences, constraints and effects. However, little research is available examining several HR practices as a whole in schools. Drawing on the theoretical perspectives of strategic HRM and the resource-based view this study investigates how and why HR architectures for new teachers are configured by looking at schools’ hiring, induction and tenure practices. The analysis is based on semi-structured interviews with 54 primary school principals in Flanders (Belgium). Looking at the strategic and HR orientation of schools, we identified six HR architectures for new teachers. The results of this study suggest that the different HR architectures can be explained by both contextual factors and characteristics of the principal.
