Different researchers linked educational leadership and human resource management (HRM) to the quality of teaching and learning and stressed the critical role of principals in carrying out HRM. Yet, little is known about the relationship between principals’ enactment of HR practices and their leadership style. This study, based on interviews with principals and questionnaires with teachers in 75 primary schools, indicates that the HR architecture of a school (i.e. the configuration of different HR practices together) is linked to teachers’ perception of their principals’ instructional and transformational leadership. These results underscore the importance of an integrated perspective on leadership in order to configure HR practices high strategically.
