Profiles of Student Practices During Item Review: Case Studies for Educational Psychology

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Educational psychology courses typically cover many topics that directly or indirectly relate to student metacognition. Metacognition plays an important role in many activities that students undertake in the classroom. One activity is the test taking process, and specifically the process of changing answers throughout a test. Therefore, in an attempt to make an educational psychology undergraduate course more meaningful to students, a decision was made to analyze students’ test taking data, along with some additional questionnaires. The purpose of our study was to examine the issue of student bias in answer changing through a mixed methods methodology. Three student profiles were created and are described in the current study.
