Pathways to Vocational Excellence: Vocational Characteristics, Career Pathways, and Environmental Conditions in the Context of Skills Competitions

Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

The study continues the earlier research of modeling of vocational excellence (e.g., Nokelainen, 2010, in press; Nokelainen, Stasz & James, 2013; Pylväs, Nokelainen & Roisko, 2013, in press). Based on the Developmental Model of Vocational Excellence (Nokelainen, in press), the study analyses the role of natural abilities (gifts), intrinsic characteristics (self-regulatory abilities), and extrinsic conditions (domain and non-domain specific factors) in development of vocational expertise and vocational excellence. The target group consists of the past WorldSkills competition medallists (n=18) who have entered the working life, their employers (n=16) and colleagues (n=16) from the same vocational field (as a comparison group). The qualitative data analysis was conducted with content analysis and Bayesian classification modeling.
