The evaluation of teachers and teacher preparation has evolved over the last 20 years. Recently, the focus has shifted to the use of student learning data to measure teacher effectiveness. Less has been written about the evaluation of student teaching. This study examines evaluation instruments from top education schools for criteria most closely associated with using student learning data to increase learning. Findings outline the criteria that hold student teachers responsible for their students’ learning. These findings and national standards can assist teacher preparation programs in building evaluation instruments that reflect this important aspect of teacher accountability. Ultimately, creating highly qualified and effective teachers is a social justice issue; each child deserves a teacher focused on his/her learning and well-being.
