Methodological Implications of Using a Mixed-Methods Case Study to Examine an Educational Partnership

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Marriott, Floor: Sixth Level, Purdue/Wisconsin

Abstract

This paper reflects upon the process of using a mixed methods case study design to investigate a federally funded cross-sector partnership for STEM education. The study under discussion examined a partnership led by an intermediary, or third party, organization in order to understand how it created an infrastructure for change. A mixed methods case study design was used in which a quantitative survey measuring collaboration was embedded within a primarily qualitative study to understand the characteristics of the partnership and the partners’ perspectives on its progress. The quantitative collaboration measure complemented the qualitative findings. This study strategically integrated methods at both the design and analysis stages in order to create a holistic understanding of the partnership’s work and progress.
