Microgenetic Learning Analytics: A Computational Approach to Research on Student Learning

Abstract

In this paper we present the development of a new research method that combines microgenetic analysis techniques derived from the field of developmental psychology with learning analytic techniques, derived from the field of computer science. We term this new method Microgenetic Learning Analytics (MLAc). We focus on the theoretical underpinnings of this new method and we provide the procedural details and analytic results of a pilot application of the method to text derived from videotaped data.
