This participatory action research project establishes in two schools an educational resiliency framework to build capacity to design sustainable systems for attenuating trauma and promoting school success by addressing specific challenges facing children, their families and teachers. Outcomes include: (1) a parent-teacher leadership team; (2) a Safe Space Restoration Room (SSRR or “The Well”, as it is known in the school community); and (3) a system for continuous study and matched interventions for how resilience-development and trauma-attenuation work in their particular setting. Documented are new practices by which the two urban schools promote school success despite the trauma and chronic stress experienced by many of city children and families.
