Media arts education programs offer a response to the challenges of interpreting, understanding and participating in an increasingly mediated and complex world. This presentation features a study investigating marginalized youths’ media arts practice in two different community media arts programs in an urban city. By sharing this research findings, we aim to identify the qualities and characteristics of informal learning spaces that encourage youth to create meanings from arts practice and digital participation. The discussion addresses the role of community arts programming in developing linkages between individual and collective identity among the groups of youth, as well as ways that enabling support and infrastructure for social transformation can be embedded across educational sectors.
