Improving professional development is a key aspect in changing educator practices, especially professional development related to antioppression and equity. However, such professional development tends to conjure strong emotions for educators. These emotions are a very powerful aspect of antioppressive professional learning but are usually under-explored. As such, conceptualizing the role of emotions in antioppressive education helps to create a fuller picture of the impact of such pedagogy on individual educator change. In this proposal I share my qualitative study on how antioppressive pedagogy, specifically antiracist, played out in the professional development of educators in graduate school. Specifically I focus on the experience of learners from traditionally racially marginalized backgrounds. Implications relate to improving antioppressive pedagogy as professional development.
