Schooling and Occupational Status Attainment: Learning From Longitudinal Data

Abstract

Using the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth dataset, the purpose of this research study was to explain income obtained in 2011 based on individuals’ demographic characteristics, high school curriculum program participation, high school academic achievement, degree attainment, and employment factors. While research has found short and medium term advantages for CTE graduates in regard to labor market outcomes (Lerman, 2007; Silverberg et al., 2004), little is known of long-term workforce outcomes associated with differentiated schooling experiences. This study reveals individuals who participated in dual tracks in high school had the most promising long-term labor market outcomes as it relates to earnings potential.
