This study presents four mixed-methods case studies of secondary STEM teachers’ implementation of engineering design in their classrooms based on their participation in a College of Engineering professional development (PD) where they were introduced to the Challenge Based Learning (CBL) as a pedagogical strategy for teaching engineering to secondary age students. The data gathered for the case studies included instruments to understand the teachers’ practice prior to the PD and during their implementation of CBL lessons within their particular school contexts. The results indicate a) a reform pre-disposition was more important than content; b) there was greater focus on process than science or mathematics content; and c) the idea of addressing a global challenge was reconstructed to creating relevance.
