Educational researchers have been accused of speaking to vague concepts rather than real problems and specific policies. An online survey presented 15 selected-response items concerning the goals of education, school performance, teacher preparation, teacher evaluation, school improvement, and funding. Two open-ended items were analyzed, and interviews with five educational researchers were conducted. The results suggested a positive view of public education and support for specific policies, especially increased funding. Researchers also rejected policies, such as increased privatization, testing, charters schools, student retention, and test score-based teacher evaluation. The mixed method approach provided elaborations and connections beyond the quantitative results. Many of their positions are in conflict with current directions in educational policy.
