Abstract

The purpose of the study is to improve our understanding of transfer college students, by examining the patterns in and predictors of cognitive skills development among transfer college students. Moreover, this study examines how such patterns and predictors differ by student’s gender and race within this population. Findings from this study show that cognitive development occurs differently for various subgroups within transfer college students. When considering gender, male and female transfer college students have different needs. Finally, White, Asian, Latino, and African-American students all have many similar predictors of cognitive development, yet group has unique predictors of cognitive skills development that should be considered by college and university administrators.
