Forging Campus/Family Partnerships: An Exploration of Familial Influences on Student-Athlete Major Choice and Career Exploration

Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

Higher education professionals must seek to further understand life experiences that impact student-athletes as they transition to higher education campus environments and learn to balance roles as both students and athletes (Adler & Adler, 1987; Bell, 2009). This research presentation draws on the 2006 NCAA GOALS Dataset to consider how a student-athlete’s athletics family and immediate family mutually influence decision making during the higher education experience to prepare for life after sport. We consider this influence specifically within the context of major choice and career exploration during the college experience.
