Abstract

To gain insight in developmental trajectories of self-regulated learning (SRL) strategy use when students make the transition from elementary to secondary school, the present study investigates how students’ SRL develops and how these developments differ for boys and girls, and students with different general achievement level. A total of 70 students completed twice a self-report questionnaire and 16 students also performed a think-aloud task. Results showed that students’ SRL remained rather stable over time and did not differ across groups. The results advocate the need to provide elementary school children explicit instruction regarding SRL to adequately prepare them for the more demanding learning environments typical of secondary education.
