The Effects of a School-Wide Data-Based Decision-Making Intervention on Student Achievement in Primary Schools

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, Vevey 4

Abstract

Despite of growing international interest in the use of data to improve educational quality, few studies examining the effects of data based decision making (DBMD) on student achievement are yet available. In the present study, the effects of a two-year DBDM intervention on student achievement were investigated. A total of 53 primary schools participated in a project aimed at implementing DBDM throughout the entire school organization.
A positive mean intervention effect on students, schools and grades, and heterogeneity in school intervention effects was found, with an average effect of approximately one extra month of schooling. Higher intervention effects were identified for low-SES schools, leading to the conclusion that especially in low-SES schools, the intervention significantly improved the performances of students.
