This analysis draws upon data from a larger mixed-methods study at a linguistically diverse middle school in the South-Atlantic region of the U.S. and focuses particularly on the classroom experiences of sixth-grade students classified as “English learners” who have been in U.S. schools since kindergarten or first grade. We analyze WIDA test scores, peer social network survey data, qualitative classroom observations completed in “mainstream” content classrooms in which students are enrolled, and teacher and student interviews to address the following:
1. What are the different types of classroom-based teacher-student and peer interactions that U.S.-educated sixth-grade ELs experience?
2. How do these experiences differ according to how “connected” students are in peer networks?
