"She Has a Real Connection With Them": Reimagining and Expanding Our Definitions of Black Masculinity and Mentoring in Education Through Female Masculinity

Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Through narrative inquiry, utilizing in-depth qualitative interviews and field observations, the goal of this research is to begin a dialogue within the field of education that expands the mentoring of Black males beyond traditional norms of sex and gender identities/performances to reimagine the ways in which Black female masculinity can be a site of mentoring for Black boys. Three subsequent themes emerged from the data: (1) Nikki’s connection to her male mentees and her discipline style; (2) Atlanta as a site of acceptance for female masculinity and mentoring Black males; and (3) contradictory space of homophobia for Black males.
