A growing body of research has examined readers’ verbal reports to describe complex epistemic, affective, and social processes involved in reading, beyond algorithmic cognitive processes, and that the research findings have contributed to our understanding of complex meaning-making practices situated in the particular physical and social contexts. In this presentation, we report the results from our research synthesis on verbal reporting methodology in reading. The goal is two-fold: a) to revisit the contribution of verbal reporting methodology to the field of reading in the past and then b) to explore the new affordances of verbal reporting methodologies for future research in reading.
