Teacher Research and Data-Driven Decision Making: Can They Coexist?

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Marriott, Floor: Third Level, Dupage

Abstract

In a joint research effort, a first grade teacher and university instructor investigated the relationship between teacher research and data driven decision making (DDDM). Utilizing mandated assessments, Liza, a classroom teacher, critically analyzed data and used this knowledge to inform how she taught guided reading. At the same time, she became a leader within her grade level as she helped her colleagues use data to work smarter not harder. Findings from this study illustrate the opportunities and obstacles that teacher researchers may encounter as they incorporate DDDM into their teacher research. The presenters will offer educators ways to simultaneously foster the co-existence of teacher research and DDDM in a variety of school settings.
