Predictive Effects of Reading Motivation on Boys' SAT Scores

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The number of students achieving at the advanced reading level in high school is lower than in earlier grades, and recent ACT test results suggest that only 25-percent of test takers were identified as college-ready in all four tested subjects. When aggregated by gender, boys consistently lag behind girls in reading achievement and are at higher risk for dropping out of high school and not attending college. Previous studies have suggested a relationship between reading motivation and academic achievement, though few have used standardized tests as a measure of achievement. This study explores the relationship between reading motivation constructs and SAT achievement scores for 265 boys as part of a larger, longitudinal study.
