Leadership for Equity and Social Justice in Arab and Jewish Schools in Israel

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Swissotel, Floor: Lucerne Level, Alpine I

Abstract

The aspiration to implement principles of SJ in school remains largely rhetorical, often failing to inform school practice (North, 2008).
This research investigated how school principals in Israel’s Jewish and Arab school systems perceive their role regarding the promotion of equitable education, bridging socio-economic and pedagogic gaps. Two research questions posed: (1) how do Jewish and Arab principals understand the concept of SJ? (2) What do they do to promote SJ reality in their schools. Learning about these educational leaders’ perceptions and daily praxis as they attempt to promote equity in this unique setting can teach us something about the effect of context on the construction of SJ.
