Bullying at Live Oak Elementary School: A Case Study of Teachers' Experiences With Mistreatment by Their Administrators

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

In education, teachers may be versed in dealing with bullying in their classrooms, but they often have difficulties recognizing when they are the victims. Teachers may blame themselves for the abuse and are therefore less likely to discuss it with colleagues (Hall, 2005). Blasé and Blasé’s research (2002; 2004; 2006) found various negative impacts associated with teacher mistreatment including: withholding resources from teachers, principals making unreasonable demands, decreases in teacher self-esteem, teacher depression, damaged workplace environments, and harmful effects on classroom instructional practices. This paper explores six teachers’ experiences with mistreatment by their administrator. The teachers who participated in my study reported a range of mistreatment by their principal, reaching across all levels of behavior (Blasé & Blasé, 2006).
