The rhetoric of white innocence is investigated as a vestige of de jure segregated schools. Using critical whiteness studies as its frame, this conventional content analysis of historical and contemporary education policy documents reveals how this rhetoric continues to be employed vis-à-vis policies of concern to students of color. Specifically, evidence is presented that demonstrates how white innocence is framed through rhetorical moves founded upon altruistic motives that ostensibly benefit students of color. I argue that contemporary discourses of altruistic white innocence are a vestige of de jure segregated schools that must be eliminated to achieve goals of equitable schooling experiences and outcomes.
