Teaching Beliefs, Practices, and Perspectives in a Global Context

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This study examines pedagogical characteristics, beliefs, perspectives and practices that contribute to a Teacher Profile, with the hopes of better understanding the beliefs that shape their educational practice. Using a mixed methods approach, including focus groups, document analysis and, in particular, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) of data resulting from the administration of the Teaching Perspectives Inventory (TPI) (Collins & Pratt, 2010), this research examines how teachers develop and define their identity as teachers. Emphasis is placed on the formation and evaluation of beliefs surrounding teaching. Findings document teaching perspectives and investigate differences in such perspectives across school level, countries, and teaching experience.
