Examining Preservice Teachers' Efforts to Integrate Digital Technology Into Literacy Instruction

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine pre-service teachers (PSTs) approaches to planning literacy instruction that integrated digital technology. The PSTs were asked to use the Technology Integration Planning Cycle for Literacy and Language Arts (Hutchison & Woodward, 2013) to plan and present a literacy lesson with an instructional goal derived from the Common Core State Standards that also incorporated the use of iPads to support and enhance the instructional goal. The following four themes emerged from data: (1) prior experiences as a barrier to integration; (2) lack of technological knowledge as a barrier to integration; (3) lack of experience following a planning cycle as a barrier to integration; and (4) over-reliance on Internet resources in lieu of TPACK.
