"I Did This and So Can You!" Exploring the Experiences and Perspectives of Male Teachers of Color in a Grow Your Own Teacher Preparation Program for Urban Schools

Abstract

This study explores the experiences and perspectives of homegrown male teachers of color who have returned to their urban community to teach. Through off-site, semi-structured interviews, the narrative of what these change agents mean to their community unfold. Having been raised in the same city as the student they teach gives them a unique advantage when dealing with pupils on a daily basis. They bring local knowledge, shared experiences, and similar backgrounds to the classroom; characteristics that give them an edge over teachers who may be from different surroundings.
