Abstract

With the increased numbers of English learners (ELs) in US schools, educators need programs that help ELs access academic content while developing English proficiency. Project GLAD is a K-12 instructional model designed to meet this need. This study is the first rigorous trial of the efficacy of a widely-used program. We conducted a two-year cluster randomized trial of Project GLAD in fifth-grade classrooms in 30 Idaho schools. In this paper, we report on the Year 2 impact on students’ reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing and science achievement for ELs and nonELs.
