Abstract

The national portrait of college access and attainment shows continuing inequalities based on class, race/ethnicity, and income, especially for Latino first generation students. The purpose of this study is to understand, from a qualitative perspective, the unique perspectives of parents regarding college access for Latino students. Participants from this study shared their experiences in accessing resources and information about college readiness and preparation for college access. Some of the preliminary results as our participants shared their experience navigating the process of their kids’ application and enrollment in postsecondary institutions are divided first, in the perceptions that parents have in order to gain access to and knowledge about college; second, in the importance of parental contextual skills, and awareness.
