The Impact of Curriculum Change on a K–12 Licensure Program: More Than the "Equity-Equality Thing"

Abstract

This mixed-methods study examined teacher candidates’ perspectives on program curriculum changes at Western University. Adaptations in content, classroom-based experiences, and community engagement were integrated to broaden preservice teachers’ viewpoints on their preparation in multicultural education and social justice and equity in urban, K-12 classrooms. Drawing on survey and focus group data, all respondents cited positively an emphasis on diverse learners with applied linkages to classroom and field experiences across the curriculum. However, program curriculum modifications impacted K-6 and 6-12 licensure level students differently. Discussion of these differential impacts and their implications will inform teacher educators in their work.
