The Design and Value of the Text-Study RoundTable: Toward a Tool for Systemic School and Workplace Renewal

Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

15/45 Text-Study RoundTables are convened in twelve monthly professional meetings to explore their potential as tools for systemic school/workplace renewal. 12 to 20+ participants take turns facilitating, using a tightly designed facilitator guide that cues 15 minutes participants’ reading of RoundTable guidelines and relevant articles on school/workplace improvement. This leaves 45 minutes for participant responses--time distributed equally among all. Previous studies of 5/25 RoundTables in classrooms and 10/50 RoundTables in academic conferences revealed multiple, interacting benefits--including increased learning and community spirit. This study investigates whether and how Text-Study RoundTables are 1-inclusive: democratically participatory; 2-continuing: sustained and user-friendly; and 3-emancipatory: accelerating positive learning and engagement. Data sources include: RoundTable Guides, process time/task analyses, and users’ views. Results support previous study findings.
