This proposal aims to discuss the challenges educational researchers in the field of learning and instruction face when adapting experimental texts from one language to another and suggests a back-translation based 4 – STEP (Specify, Translate, Explore, Pilot) approach to overcome those challenges. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed 4-STEP-approach, we conducted an empirical study in which each of the four steps was applied and evaluated with respect to adapting three English expository texts from a US-American study to the German language in order to make those texts available for the cross-cultural replication of empirical findings on the effects of headlines on learning from expository texts.
